County shows support for Bighorn Ridge Trail development
by Dana McArthur
During their March 26 meeting, Yellowhead
County Council considered a request for a letter
of support for the Hinton Mountain Bike
Association for their project to develop the
Bighorn Trail.
The route will consist of a 10km up-trail and an
stunning 5km down-trail along the Big Horn
Ridge near Hinton. The trail will be developed so
anyone can ride it with a series of climbs that
level out. It has the potential to become an 'epic'
trail which is defined as a long trail with
stunning terrain, and has the potential to attract
enthusiasts from all over the region and beyond.
The letter would assist with grant funding
applications like the Co-op Community Spaces
Grant, CFEP, and others.
"The Hinton Mountain Bike Association
(HMBA) is developing a trail system at the
Bighorn Ridge with support of Hinton Wood
Products, a division of West Fraser Mills," said
Kevin Myles, County's Parks and Special
Projects Coordinator. "Yellowhead County has
previously allocated $30,000 to this project."
"The Hinton Mountain Bike Association
continues to develop outdoor recreation
opportunities in their 12th year as a charitable
organization," stated Myles.
Council agreed unanimously to approve a
