From January 10-11, Parkland Composite High
School invited teams from neighboring towns to
compete in their PCHS 2020 Senior Basketball
Tournament.
Teams braved the cold weekend, and travelled
from Barrhead, Hinton, Whitecourt, Devon,
Westlock, and Eckville to participate. Holy Redeemer
High School's teams were also a part of the
competition.
Six women's teams and seven men's teams were
split into two pools each, with Pool A playing at
PCHS and Pool B playing at HRH's gym.
The PCHS Boys won the bronze medal over the
weekend, defeating RF Staples from Westlock 68-61.
The team had been disappointed in their
performance for their second round robin game, but
fought back to earn their way to the bronze medal
game.
Coach Vernon Johnson said that the bronze medal
game was “probably our best game of the season.” The PCHS Senior Girls basketball team battled against the Hilltop Chargers during PCHS' 2020

and have positioned themselves for a peak season,” Shaylyn Thornton
said Johnson. “We lost one of our key players early in
the game to injury… but some of the younger players
stepped up and filled the void.”
Johnson named Dante Riley as the “top
performer” for the tournament, explaining that he
“stepped into a leadership role within our offence and
was a force on defence.”
The PCHS Girls had a very exciting weekend run.
They made it to the gold medal final against Barrhead
and showed their determination throughout the game.
“My girls battled back to tie the score and in the
end only losing by one,” said Coach Wanita Willcott.
“Grade 12 player Hailey Lubarsky led the way with
23 points and also scored the basket that tied the
game with only 20 seconds left. The crowd was on
their feet!”
Willcott felt the whole tournament went well and
is happy with how the season has been going for both
the girls and boys this year.
“Both teams are young this year and are
rebuilding,” said Willcott. “[We've had] good results
at the tournaments each of us has attended.”

being a part of the PCHS 2020 Tournament as well.
The HRH boys played well, but lost to the
eventual gold medal winners Hilltop, as well as RF
Staples. They were able to take the win in their game
against Barrhead.
The HRH girls played two Friday games,
unfortunately coming up short against eventual gold
medal winners Barrhead, and bronze medal winners
Eckville. They came back strong Saturday, winning
against Harry Collinge from Hinton.
HRH Athletic Director Julie Rothwell says the
teams plan to focus on exams next, and then they will
start to get ready for their next tournament at the end
of January.
“[We want to] develop into a stronger basketball
team through hard work and persistence,” said
Rothwell.
Up next for PCHS are tournaments at the end of
the month as well. The boys team will be travelling to
Whitecourt, and the girls will be headed to
Morinville. The Holy Redeemer Junior A Girls basketball team are starting their season strong by winning a
