Yellowhead County residents gather

for Rural Crime Prevention session

by Deanna Mitchener

Yellowhead County residents recently
attended a session on how to protect one's rural
property on April 11 at the Peers Multiplex.
Director of Community Services Christopher
Read was the emcee for the evening, ensuring the
timeline was kept on track.
Attendees had time to ask questions and
received information pamphlets to take home at
the end of the night.
Yellowhead County Mayor Gerald Soroka
welcomed attendants, “It is great seeing so many
people here tonight, but that also comes with a
positive and a negative. Positive being that people
are really interested and want to learn more; and
negative that we have an issue with crime in this
area and people are wanting to seek information
and see what options are available.”
Cor DeWit with the Alberta Provincial Rural
Crime Watch Association was also in attendance
to share information and give a presentation
alongside Edson RCMP Staff Sergeant Peter
King.
The two spoke in great detail about some of the
crimes in and around the area and helped
attendees feel like they were going home with
more resources on how to better protect
themselves and their property.
Kids Make A Difference is sponsored by: “A part of my job is to explain and inform
community residents about ways of protecting
themselves without taking the law into their own
hands,” King told guests. “The society we live in
today is not the same society we grew up in years
ago. We need to change our actions to meet new
demanding challenges. As property owners we
need to safeguard better to protect our property
