Healthy eating helps local

students achieve success

by Deanna Mitchener

Things we eat and drink affect our ability to
keep our brains healthy and alert. When it
comes to learning in school-students need to
nourish their brains.
The foods we eat not only affects our
learning it affects our mood and the way we age
in latter years.
Schools are realizing the importance ofkids
having healthy food in their stomachs each day
to help them learn. But for many reasons, a
healthy diet isn't always possible. So many
schools are now providing breakfast programs,
snack programs, and even lunch programs. This
is a great way to offer healthy food to all
students and no one feels like their are being
singled out.
Feeding a school full of hungry, eager to
learn students can be very costly. And Edson
has been very fortunate to have local companies
step up and offer assistance financing these
programs; like Repsol who donated $2,000
towards the Mary Bergeron Snack Program on
January 30.
Repsol's External Relations employee Jesse
K.irillo, said, "At the end of the year we look at
all our remaining budgets and we like to spread
it out to all the schools, as much as possible, for
healthy snack and lunch options. We will be
doing this at all the Edson schools in the area."
Parent Council Chair representative Crystal
Metzger, said, "It is costing us an average of
$800 a month to provide the fruit bowls for
each of the classrooms twice a week, and one in
the office that has apples, oranges, and bananas
to help encourage students to choose a healthy
snack. The fruit bowls are open to anyone that
would like some fresh fruit. 11
"Then in the kitchen we keep extra
sandwiches, yogurt, cheese sticks and other
healthy choices for the students that don't have
an efficient lunch. We are trying to ensure they
are filling their bellies so they can nourish their
11
minds, said Metzger.
"Parents looking after the snack program
usually make ham and cheese, just ham, and
just cheese sandwiches for the kids to pick
from. There has definitely been an increase in Jesse Kirillo External Relations with Repsol presented a cheque for $2,000 to Snack Program
the amount of usage of the program this year," Coordinators Heather Greiner and Carla Smith at Mary Bergeron School on January 30.
