PCHS Pink Pancake Breakfast s CHOOL
expresses the value of being kind Times
by Brianne Benson
On February 26, Parkland Composite High
School hosted their annual Pink Pancake
Breakfast to coincide with the Pink Shirt Day
anti-bullying campaign.
This year's event was organized by volunteer
s CHOOL staff members and family-school liaison
Jessica Craig. Students gathered to enjoy the
pink-coloured pancakes, breakfast sausages,
Times and beverages. Staff and students were also
encouraged to wear pink clothing to school in
order to symbolically stand up against
bullying.
Principal Mark Maris happily greeted
students at the door as they arrived, something
he said he and the staff do often in an effort to
maintain “an upfront presence” with students.
He said, “Before all classes our staff stand at

kids be isolated and on their own because
sometimes that's when bullying happens.”
“We try to make sure our staff is here talking
to the kids in the mornings and we are talking
to them at practices and events at night just to
keep that connection with them,” Maris added.
According to Maris, the Pink Pancake
Breakfast has been a tradition for over 10
years, and has served as a special day to
express to students the value of being kind.
When asked why it is important to have a
bully-free education environment, Maris said,
“It is important because we have to teach
kindness here.”
“Unfortunately, it is true that people need to
be taught to be kind,” Maris continued. “This is
a great time to do it, while they are teenagers,
and before we send them out into the world
because it affects our whole community. We
have to teach them the reasons to be kind and
