For 9 years, Holy Redeemer High School has
hosted a variety of fundraising events as part of
'March 4 A Cure' month, in which they dedicate
the month of March to raise funds for the
Alberta Cancer Foundation.
Since then, the school has been able to raise
over $95,000 for the Foundation, and were one
step closer to reaching the $100,000 milestone
during this year's March 4 A Cure Silent
Auction on March 15.
Holy Redeemer Teacher Michael Bachinsky
started March 4 A Cure 13 years ago in his
parent's backyard in Edmonton after feeling
helpless following the passing of his
grandfather, who died of lung cancer. “I didn't
know what to do or where to donate money to
so we figured we'd start our own event,” he
said. “When I got a job at Holy Redeemer, I
brought it with me to the school, pitched the
idea to the students, the students loved it, and
we've never looked back.”

have organized in-school basketball shooting Pictured is March 4 A Cure organizer and HRH teacher Michael Bachinsky, as well as student
competitions, Cake Wars, a bake sale, a ticket volunteers Danielle Bittner, Mekha George, and Lauren Leslie during the 2019 HRH March 4 A
auction, Locker Wars, and monthly hot lunches. Cure silent auction. photo Cassie Kushniruk
“Some of the volunteers in grade 10 have been
helping out since they've been in grade 7,”
mentioned Bachinsky. “They come back and
help out each year which is very meaningful to
me.”
One of the most anticipated events during this
time, however, is the March 4 A Cure Silent
Auction, which is open to the public and always
receives an exceptional turnout. “The turnout is
always really good; there are always a lot of
people coming out to the events over the last 9
years and this year is no different,” said
Bachinsky.
An excellent selection of items were available
at this year's silent auction, all of which were
donated by families or local businesses. “Over
the course of the last nine years we've had huge
support from the Town of Edson raising this
money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation,” said
Bachinsky. “The economy is tough, and for
local businesses to still find a way to donate
items to our cause just goes to show you that
cancer affects everybody.”
Bachinsky gave props to the HRH students,
who were fully responsible for the success of
the silent auction. “All of the items that are
here, the Holy Redeemer students have gone to
the businesses, handed out the letters, and have
really been the driving force behind getting this
stuff,” said Bachinsky. “If it wasn't for the
students, this event wouldn't run.” Essence Dance Co. dancers ages 3-18 stole the HRH stage during their 14th annual dance recital on

While the HRH silent auction was taking place
in the foyer, another exciting event was
occurring in the gym: the 14th annual Essence Foundation following the March 4 A Cure able to raise $4300 for the Alberta Cancer
Dance recital. “We figured the more people that fundraisers, HRH has the tradition of donating Foundation. “A huge thank you to all who
could see the items, the merrier because it's the funds in the name of a loved one or family attended and donated to our cause,” said
