Weyerhauser donates tree to Edson Daycare
by Cassie Kushniruk
The Daycare Society of Edson is a licensed and
accredited not-for-profit organization passionate
about bringing nature elements into the classroom
and bringing children outside to learn about
sustainable natural environments.
Last month, the Daycare Society teamed up with
Weyerhaeuser to have the children participate in a
nature-based activity. “We went for a nature walk
and some employees from Weyerhaeuser came
with us and we explored the walking paths and the
backside of Edson,” said Daycare Society of Edson
Director Rachel Ripkens.
Following this activity, the Daycare Society
received a $1000 grant from Weyerhaeuser through
the company's Giving Fund.
After expressing interest in using some of the
grant money to purchase a tree, Weyerhaeuser
decided to instead donate a tree to the Daycare
Society. “We selected a [willow] tree together,”
said Ripkens.
On June 27, the Weyerhauser lead team from
Edson joined the Daycare Society of Edson to
plant the donated tree in the backyard of the Edson
Early Learning and Child Care Centre. “We
wanted to plant it in the middle of our bike track so On June 27, children with the Daycare Society of Edson had the opportunity to help plant a willow tree,
that we would have shade in the middle of the yard which was donated by Weyerhaeuser. photo Cassie Kushniruk
and as it grows potential for swinging and
climbing,” Ripkens said.
Weyerhaeuser's senior management team from
Seattle, WA—including the CAO, CFO, CEO and
the Senior Vice Presidents from each
department—were also in attendance to help plant

management team meeting here in Edson and they
wanted to do a community project,” explained
Edson Weyerhaeuser representative Chris Pettie.
A few children with the Daycare Society helped
Weyerhaeuser representatives shovel in dirt to
secure the tree in its place and were certainly
excited to see this new addition in their outdoor
play area.
“These guys are important to keep our
Sand & Gravel Sales/Hauling community working without parents having to

a lot of young families at Weyerhaeuser, so it was
Serving Edson & District Since 1974 very important to us that we supported the Daycare
Society.”
