New coordinator for P.A.R.T.Y. Program
by Deanna Mitchener
The Prevent Alcohol Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program started in Edson in 2015. Before then, students had to
travel to Edmonton to participate in this program.
Incorporating the program into Edson has taken on a few changes over the years and will take on another this year. In the past,
Leisa Belcourt was the main coordinator, but now the program will be coordinated through Victim Services.
Michelle Mole, who has been with Victim Services for the past four years, said, “Colleen Talpash and myself stepped up to
help along with Alison Roth from Alberta Health Services to continue the P.A.R.T.Y. Program. We feel it is important for the
program to continue.”
The program will be taking place from May 28-30 this year, starting at 9 a.m. and wrapping up around 2:30 p.m.
“We will be having a couple of speeches in the morning before the re-enactment scene takes place, hoping to give a little more
time to warm up outside in hopes that the weather cooperates,” said Mole.
Mole said, “Holy Redeemer High School, Parkland High School, Niton School and Yellowhead Koinonia Christian School as
well as the Learning Connection will all be taking part in the program this year.”
“Our key-note speaker this year will be Amanda Oling, who will be talking about the impact of one decision,” said Mole. “We
are very excited to have her back again this year, as she spoke here a couple of years ago and certainly left an impact on
everyone in the room.”
The P.A.R.T.Y. Program will be doing a re-enactment of a motor vehicle accident in the parking lot of the Legion in order to
provide a better realization of how one decision can impact not only you personally, but also family, friends, and community
members.
Students participating in the program will listen to videos and watch the full re-enactment from the moment first responders are
dispatched. Students will also have a hot meal for lunch; however, each student will be using some kind of injury apparatus to
show just how difficult life can be doing a simple task such as eating. Hopefully this will leave students with a lasting impact on
how they make decisions in the future.
