Pacers Rugby Team captures Bronze in Drayton Valley
submitted Trish Day, PCHS
With the snow finally melted, Parkland's boys
rugby team participated in its first tournament of
the season May 10 weekend. The team took part
in the ninth annual Frank Maddock High School
Rugby Tournament in Drayton Valley featuring
teams from around the province.
On Friday, the Pacers played three hard fought
matches that turned out to be very close affairs.
First, they battled Memorial High School from
Stony Plain. Later in the afternoon, the boys
played against the tournament hosts from
Drayton Valley. In both games, the Pacers came
up short 5-7. Then, in the final game of the day,
Parkland faced Lloydminister Comprehensive
High School in a close match up in which our
boys won 7-5, putting them in the bronze medal
match on Saturday.
Once again, PCHS faced their tournament hosts
and zone rivals, but this time they were much
better prepared offensively. As a result, the
game was not even close as the Pacers shutdown
Frank Maddock's team with a convincing win,
33-10. Notable standouts in the game and in the
tournament included Pacers centre, Diego
Espinosa (gr. 11) with two tries and scrum half,
Leyton Smith (gr. 11) who also had two tries in
the game.
The boys have earned a well-deserved rest this
weekend with no games scheduled, but the squad
will return to the rugby pitch on May 24 as the PCHS Pacers Rugby Team member Leyton Smith takes control during the Frank Maddock High School
team travels north to play in the Barons 7's Rugby Tournament on May 10 weekend in Drayton Valley. submitted
