PCHS hosts Senior Volleyball tournament

by Shaylyn Thornton

Parkland Composite High School held a
Senior Volleyball tournament on November 1
and 2. PCHS Senior Boys and Senior Girls teams
each competed in the tournament.
Visiting teams came from Devon, Evansburg,
Whitecourt, Mayerthorpe, Pigeon Lake, and
McBride to compete.
Both of Parkland's teams finished in second
place overall. For the Senior Girls, Pigeon Lake
Regional School took first place, meaning they
have won the tournament for three out of the last
four years.
The Girls lost in an extremely close matchup,
losing 17-15 in the third set after splitting the
first two games.
The Senior Boys also pushed their Finals
game to three sets, but Hilltop High School from
Whitecourt managed to pull out the win in the The Parkland Pacers Senior Boys Volleyball team took on the Grand Trunk Grizzlies in the first game of

The Senior Girls are coached by Kaitlyn and
Tyler Rovang, volunteers from the community
who have a love for volleyball. Their team has
certainly proven themselves to be hard workers
as the season has progressed thus far.
Grade 11 student and player Kenzie Bills said
that she originally joined volleyball to “keep in
shape,” but has now found a team that is all
about “bonding, and the connections with each
other.”
Anika Maurer and Kyla Kiland are two
players in Grade 12, and they agreed with Bills,
saying that the team's support for each other is a
big part of what makes them unique. Kiland
summed up their team in three words:
“teamwork, confidence, friendship.”
Maurer said that she started because her
siblings played volleyball, and Kiland was quick

season has been winning both gold and silver
medals in tournaments.
The Senior Boys have had an uphill battle this
season, with many injuries taking out players and
preventing the team “from having a consistent
lineup,” said Visser. “Starting leftside hitter Aden
Weber suffered a broken elbow last weekend in
Devon and starting Middle Blocker Luke
Johnston is out with a broken collarbone which
was unrelated to volleyball.”
Visser noted that the Boys team is younger,
with only one Grade 12 student. Even with these
challenges, the team earned their Silver medal at
the PCHS tournament.
While at the game, the crowd could be heard
chanting, “Let's Go Pacers, Let's Go,” as the
Pacers' mascot Cobalt banged on a drum.
The stands were full for a lot of the
tournament, and even saw some visitors from
Mary Bergeron Elementary when Mr. Murray
brought over some Grade 4/5 students to cheer
on the Pacers.
“The community support is great!” said The Holy Redeemer Senior Girls Volleyball team had a successful weekend tournament in Hinton on
Visser. “We had many alumni players come from November 2nd. The Rebels squad emerged with the gold medal after some very hard fought games.
"This group of young ladies continues to impress everyone with their outstanding play," says HRH
