National
Newspaper
Week
Newspaper journalism—both
local and national—is critically
important, especially in the reality
in which we live.
From October 6 to 12, 2019,
newspapers across Canada
celebrate National Newspaper
Week.
The 2019 National Newspaper
Week (NNW) program is a mass
awareness campaign, designed to
recognize the role that newspapers
play in providing Canadians with
credible, factual news and spotlight
why newspapers continue to be a
trusted source of information that is
critical to our democracy. The fact
that Canadians are concerned about
fake news and disinformation
reinforces the need for media
literacy.
The 2019 federal election has
heightened concerns around fake
news and reinforced the critical
role that newspapers play.
Research from CIRA has found
that 70 per cent of Canadians are
concerned that fake news could
impact the outcome of the federal
election. The goal for National
Newspaper Week is to ensure
Canadians understand and
appreciate the critical role that
newspapers play in our democracy
and in providing us with trusted,
credible information.
