55 units of life saving blood collected at donor clinic in Edson

by Deanna Mitchener

The Canadian Blood Services held a donation
clinic in Edson on April 7 at the Royal Canadian
Legion.
Volunteer Jean Linklater said, "It was a
successful scaled back clinic. 63 people
registered, 8 deferred and 55 units of life saving
blood collected. The goal was for 58 units."
The Weekly Anchor took the opportunity to
have a few of our questions answered by Deb
Steele-Kretschmer, Specialist - Strategic
Communications with the Canadian Blood
Services.
Q: With COVID-19 what different safety
measures has the clinic added?
A: "Canadian Blood Services' protocols for
screening donors and cleaning our donor centres
have always been extremely robust —
respiratory infections are common and we are
prepared. However, as information about
COVID-19 quickly evolves, we are taking
additional measures to enhance our protocols to
better protect anyone who comes through our
doors. Only healthy people are eligible to
donate blood. All prospective donors are
screened for any symptoms of illness. As we
would for flu symptoms or other illnesses, we
ask donors to stay at home if they are not
feeling well, since only healthy people are
eligible to donate blood.
In addition to our routine cleaning, infection-
control and screening practices, in light of
recent developments with COVID-19 we have
introduced enhanced cleaning measures,
wellness stations and physical distancing
measures to better protect anyone who comes
through our doors (i.e. donors and staff)."
Q: How has COVID 19 impacted the
donations?
A: "Early in March, we saw an increase in
appointment cancellations due to the COVID-19
pandemic. Since our call for support on March
16, we have seen a notable increase in blood
donations that has helped maintain the blood
inventory in the short term, and we thank donors
for their generosity. But this effort is a
marathon, not a sprint.
