County World Snow Day at Bear Lake features new skating loop
by Cassie Kushniruk
To encourage participation in snow-
based activities and winter play,
Yellowhead County hosted their
fourth annual World Snow Day event
at Bear Lake Campground on January
25.
Although World Snow Day was
officially held on January 19, the
County decided to postpone the event
in hopes of warmer weather.
Fortunately, the event received clear
skies and warm temperatures on
January 25, which played an
important role in attracting more
people out.
Cross-country ski and snowshoe
rentals were available for day use
courtesy of the County, which
allowed attendants of all ages to
explore the gorgeous winter scenery
of Bear Lake. Families also enjoyed
sleigh rides thanks to Setzer's Sleigh
and Wagon Rides, as well as smores
and hot chocolate over the campfire.

that was just recently added to Bear
Lake Campground's growing list of
winter activities. “Today is our
official opening of the loop,” stated
Yellowhead County Recreation
Coordinator Mark Tavenor.“Our
feedback on the loop has been
incredible so far.”
Overall, approximately 250 people
made it out to the County's World
Snow Day event, which is more than
twice the amount of people who
attended the event in 2019. Tavenor
credits this exceptional turnout to the
new skating loop, which, according to
him, was “a huge draw”. “The fact
that you have the trail to follow is
something new and exciting for
residents to do,” he said.
When asked why Bear Lake
Campground is chosen as the
destination for the County's World
Snow Day event year after year,
Tavenor replied, “It's very accessible
and it's large enough to have those
options of a sleigh ride. There are also
plenty of places that you can go with
cross-country skis and snowshoes.” th
