Town declines support for advocacy fund due to lack of information

by Masha Scheele

During the Town of Edson's Committee of
the Whole meeting on January 8, Council
voted not to contribute to the Federation of
Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Special
Advocacy Fund on the basis of lack of
information on what issues the money would
be put toward.
“This is a voluntary contribution, it is not
contingent, it does not affect our membership
in the organization. It would support that effort
for FCM to provide advocacy on behalf of the
municipal stakeholders in the upcoming
federal election,” explained Edson's CAO,
Mike Derricott, about the voluntary payable
amount FCM asked for of $800 + GST. Edson's CAO, Mike Derricott began the discussion about contributing to FCM's Special Advocacy Fund

vital opportunity to propel local governments
to new heights. FCM's Board of Directors
approved a two-year Special Advocacy Fund
to drive an intensive, multi-faceted campaign
to keep municipal priorities front-and-centre
heading into Election 2019, as well as in the
crucial first months of a new government.
“We should support this but we should have
it in writing what we want them to advocate
for. Don't just assume that they're advocating
