Two events took place on Saturday, May 18. Mini
bronc riding is for participants ages 6-14. There are
three pools based on age. The winner of the event
was Chase Siemans, age 12 from Chetwynd, B.C.
Rank Mini Pony Ltd provided the ponies for the
event.
The other event was Extreme Bull Fighting, where
the bullfighter goes one-on-one with a 1200lb
Mexican fighting bull. Edson's competition was the
third and largest in the XBF circuit where events
take place right across Canada.
The bullfighter must engage the bull for 30
seconds and then has the option of using another 15
seconds to showcase his skill. In this event the
bullfighter and the bull are both awarded points.
There are two judges that score the bull and the
bullfighter out of 25. The scores are then combined
for a total possible 100 points. The top two from
each of two pools moved on to the Sunday night
final.
On Sunday the action continued with a large
contingent of bull riders. Thirty riders competed
over the course of the evening in this open event for
the $5000 purse. At one point in the evening the
power went out but the organizers did not let that Bullfighter Maxine Turgeon in action during the Bullarama at Repsol Place in Edson on May 18 weekend.

participation while organizers scrambled to get
generators set up so the competition could continue.
With partial power restored the competition
continued in the dimly lit arena. Luckily power was
restored a short time later for the remainder of the
riders. The top eight riders moved on to the final.
Bullfighters for the riding competition, Travis James
of Edson and Dominic Roy of Montreal, did a
spectacular job of keeping riders safe.
The final showdown for the bullfighters also took
place on Sunday night. These competitors showed
their speed, acrobatic ability, and bravery as they
vied for top spot. This was a competition, but the
bullfighters do not hesitate to jump into harms way
if a fellow bullfighter is in trouble. This was very
clearly evident when the first contestant of the night
got into trouble and the other competitors jumped
into the ring to help him. At the end of the
competition Maxime Turgeon of Quebec City, QC,
was awarded top honors but in fact when score cards
were re-examined there was a tie between Turgeon
and Aaron Mercer of Calgary, AB.
Before the final rides of the evening the top eight
riders were auctioned off as a fundraiser for the
Yellowhead Ag Society. After the society takes their
portion the remainder is split 60/40 between the Bull rider Shay Marks off to a great start during the Bullarama at Repsol Place in Edson on May 18
