Special guest at woodturning class brings an artist touch

Wood shop teacher at Parkland Composite
High School, Mike Biehler, recently began
teaching his first session of woodturning classes
to the public. On November 11, he welcomed his
friend and special guest from the Edmonton
Woodturners Guild, Glen Christenson, to the
scheduled class.
Wood turning uses a lathe that holds pieces of
wood and spins them at a chosen rate. From
there, a chisel is held against the wood using
varying levels of force to peel off layers of
wood, creating a desired shape or pattern.
Students can begin with making different types
of decorative bowls, vases, dishes, or plates.
Then eventually move on to more advanced
projects like jewelry pendants.
Christenson said, “We just don't have any
spaces like this where we can bring five or six
people together without causing a lot of
disruption to businesses and things like that, so
this is a fantastic facility.”
Christenson brought additional equipment on
top of the six wood lathes already stationed in
Biehler's wood shop. From Edmonton he brought
the tools and materials required for wood dying
and woodburning, as well as a dental drill, all for
