Upcoming Blanket Exercise: Canadian history from an Indigenous perspective
by Brianne Benson
Joseph Large and Paul Belanger from the
Keepers of the Athabasca Indigenous
environmental group will be hosting an
interactive learning experience about Canadian
history from an Indigenous perspective, at the
Edson Friendship Centre on November 21.
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an activity
that uses blankets paired with participants, each
representing an area of land or territory, that are
used to provide a visual and immersive
representation of the colonialization of
Indigenous lands and people.
The exercise was created in 1997 in response to
the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in
1996. Belanger said, “It was not very popular at
first, but it's grown slowly and now it's catching
like fire. It is a workshop that has proven to be
quite powerful and emotional and it's helped a lot
of people understand the history better in a very
tangible way rather than just reading a book.”
