Students learn to vote at The Learning Connection

by Barbara Shepherd, Assistant Principal

Student Vote is a program offered by CIVIX,
a non-partisan, national registered charity
dedicated to building the skills and habits of
active and engaged citizenship among young
Canadians. At TLC, we share the vision of
CIVIX for a strong and inclusive democracy
where all young people are ready, willing and
able to participate.
The national results of Student Vote differed in
some interesting ways from the actual election
results! According to CIVIX, 1,187,987 students
in 7981 schools across Canada participated in
the student vote with the following results:
The Liberal Party won 112 seats to form a
minority government.
The NDP formed the official opposition with
98 seats.
The Conservative Party won 93 seats, the
Green Party took 27 seats, and the Bloc
Quebecois won 12 seats.
TLC students were excited to have the
opportunity to learn about the electoral process
and are looking forward to voting when they are
old enough to do so.
