Let's back up and consider what we mean by
“self-identify”. It is what you believe about

But what happens when a person self-
identifies with descriptions that are, let's say,
arguable. Two recent examples come to mind.
Kaitlin Jenner (formerly Bruce) self-identifies
as a “woman”, despite being born male and
having a Y chromosome. Rachel Dolezal
publically identified as “black”, despite her birth
to Caucasian parents. I would describe her as
well-tanned, but that is beside the point. A more
unusual example are the otherkin. According to
Wikipedia, otherkin are “people who identify as
partially or entirely non-human”. As this
community is almost entirely online, the jury is
still out as to whether otherkin actually take
themselves seriously, or simply use it as a
metaphor. They have certainly taken the motto
“Be what you want to be” to a whole new level!
Now, it's a free country. I believe people
should be free to self-identify however they like.
If we start limiting what people can say about
themselves, it is a slippery slope we don't want
to start down.
