Yellowhead Growing Project raises $332,000 dollars since 2005
by Brianne Benson
The Yellowhead Growth Project organized
their second annual Harvest Banquet as a
fundraiser for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
The event was hosted at the Peers Multiplex
on November 9, and featured a delicious
dinner catered by Sherry Johnston, a
presentation by Terence Barg from the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and a silent
auction.
According to event coordinator Cheryl
DeLeeuw, the group “used to grow a crop, sell
it, and then donate the proceeds to the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank, but for the last
two years we have done a banquet instead
because we were having trouble getting help
with the crop so we thought we'd try this
fundraiser.”
The dinner catered by Sherry Johnston
received high praise, and was priced at $20 a
plate, or $150 for a table of eight people. The
silent auction items ranged from wine and
chocolate baskets, to tool sets, and from art
and Christmas décor, to Oilers jerseys.
The banquet style fundraiser has so far been
successful for the group. DeLeeuw reported
that “last year we raised $27,000, and after the
government matched the donation at a 4 to 1
ratio, it ended up being $135,000, so it is an
excellent fundraiser.”
Since their founding in 2005, the
