Niton Basketball Camp “a really good time”

by Shaylyn Thornton

After the wet weather rained out their original
planned event on July 19, the Yellowhead
County Parks and Recreation Department set
their Basketball Camp's new date as August 1.
The decision paid off, as a day of perfect
weather and a great group of youth made
attending the Basketball Camp well worth it.
Mark Tavenor, the County's Recreation
Coordinator and the Instructor of the camp,
allowed a max registration of 10 youth from the
ages of grades six through nine.
“With only having one instructor, more than
ten would mean that the students wouldn't get
any one-on-one time,” said Tavenor. “We got
full registration.”
The students came from across Yellowhead
County from areas such as Wildwood and Niton,
as well as areas closer to Edson. The day was
held at a Yellowhead County-owned basketball
court near the Green Grove Pool in Niton.
Tavenor noted that a big reason for choosing
the location was that it was close to the pool and
gave them the opportunity to “incorporate more
than one sport” into the day. The camp ran from
9am to 3:30pm, and then students were able to
swim from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
Before ending the day with a refreshing swim,
students learned a variety of basketball
techniques from Tavenor. “It was focused on
fun,” he said. “But we did dribbling, shooting,
and passing drills. We worked on teamwork as
well.”
