YCFD Fire Cadet Program returning this fall

by Cassie Kushniruk:

This coming fall, students ages 16-18 will
have the opportunity to participate in the
Yellowhead County Fire Department's Cadet
Program for the second year.
The program, which was modelled closely
after the Fire Cadet programs offered in
Edmonton and Calgary, enables cadets to
better understand a frrefighting career through
both classroom and hands-on training while
being taught life and career skills.
For four weekends, cadets will go through
the standard firefighter recruit training course
that firefighters are required to complete upon
applying, which will include activities such as
cutting into cars with vehicle extraction
equipment and fighting fires in controlled
scenarios using propane props. "Basically
they're doing all the training that we do," said
Yellowhead County Fire Department Captain
ofTraining Corrine Grant.
The Fire Cadet program also encourages
cadets to support the community, as 35 hours
of volunteer service is required during this
time, whether that be through food drives or
fire prevention education. Students ages 16-18 will have the opportunity to participate in the Yellowhead County Fire Department's
